Today was hot, like Houston hot. Despite the fact that our real estate agent was convinced that south-facing windows were ideal for our northern climate, I know better. Growing up in Texas, you know that south-facing windows are the equivalent of having your oven on with the door open (without the potential for gas-poisoning). Given the heat, Mr. D and I decided to check out a movie (Cyrus - very good, you should go see it).
We bought the tickets when we entered the theater, and since we used our loyalty card, we got a coupon for a free large drink & popcorn or a free ticket, which is exactly as it is written on the coupon. This theater chain has been running the promotion at least since I was in college, so 10 years (yes, that's scary). I really wanted a soda, so we decided to go ahead and use the coupon to get a popcorn - until the kid behind the counter tried to tell me it was for a soda or a popcorn.
Me - "No, it says popcorn and drink or ticket"
Kid - "No, it's for a popcorn or drink or ticket"
Mr. D - "That doesn't even make sense, a popcorn is $5, and a ticket is $13"
Kid - "Sorry, it says popcorn or drink or ticket"
Me - "No, look - putting coupon in his line of sight - popcorn AND drink OR ticket"
Kid - "I'm sorry, that's not what it means"
At this point, I marched over to guest services, which was conveniently located 10 feet away and asked a "manager." He immediately agreed and literally shouted across the lobby to the kid.
We then sort of cut in front of one guy, but we had already waited in line, and when we told him that, he was ok. When we walked up, the girl behind the counter was CONSOLING our guy, for having difficult customers. Right, even though if he had actually read the coupon, much less known about the promotion that has ALWAYS been in place, or even THOUGHT that the CUSTOMER might be right, this could have all been avoided.
I was quite proud of us, as I was the one who stood up for us, and Mr. D didn't start yelling at the guy (though it came close when he heard the girl consoling him).

Dumb Hackers
So, someone managed to hack my google account, hence the post earlier that apparently linked to a site with various male enhancement drugs. I did not create said post. A jerkface did. The jerkface also proceeded to send multiple emails to people in my address book.
Who received said emails? Luckily I don't think that they went to my entire address book, but the cross section was embarrassing enough, especially when the link to male enhancement drugs:
1. Friends (though one of their husbands works at Google, so he was nice enough to send a text saying he thought someone had hacked in)
2. Husbands of friends - funny for the content, though one sent a funny response, jokingly
3. My relatives - including one of my aunts - who responded "Thank you" ?????
4. Random customer service emails - so tripit.com (which I love) and the Museum of Modern Art (which I also love, but we let our membership lapse)
5. People I interviewed with over 18 months ago that I sent a thank you note

ADD?
I'm pretty sure I have some form of ADD/ADHD, whatever we're calling it these days. I see it everyday when I go to work, and it was the same when I was in school. At any point in time, I have at least 10 windows open on my computer. Even worse, now that internet browsers have tabs, I'll have at least five or six of those open at a time. I've been doing a lot of research at work lately, so I've caught myself with 30 tabs open at a time - which is when the drop-down list of tabs on the right comes in handy. I'll see a window to our document server open, forget why I've had it open, close it, and 5 minutes later realize what I had meant to do.
I blame this partially on my "ADD," but partly on my efficiency - which sounds weird, but isn't - because our computer system is ANCIENT. If I need to open something, I can't wait 5 minutes for it to pop up, so I'll open it and then go back to something else while I'm waiting for it. Clearly we need new computers!!

Annoying Husband
I realized I may gripe a lot on this blog, as another post popped in when I started typing the title for this one (so I'm making a tag for "annoying"). Mr. D is not generally annoying, well, not more than any other husband, but this is getting to me.
Mr. D is NOT a "reader:" he professed to me that he only read one book in high school - he managed to fake his way through the tests. Not that he didn't read in college, or law school - he's really fast, but always claimed that he didn't like to read books for pleasure. I always took it for a short attention span, because he reads magazine articles and blogs like crazy. Though not "silly blogs" like I do - he reads one where people spew about government policy and law firms (yawn). Luckily he does this while I am asleep. Mr. D usually can't fall asleep for at least an hour after we go to bed, so he reads on his laptop after I'm asleep. When he wakes up in the middle of the night, he wakes up his laptop and reads some more until he falls back asleep.
As Mr. D loves new gadgets, I got him an Kindle for Christmas, thinking it might make it easier for him to read, because he could read at night (with the book light) and not lose his page. My plan has backfired.
Whereas I used to be the one in the couple who read, the one who would actually sit and read a book - Mr. D is reading all the time now. Not only when he reads normally, but on the train, on the subway, and on the stationary bike at the gym. He is reading so many more books than I am - I'm reading "In Defense of Food" because he read it first! So annoying - I've created a monster!
