Hunger Games Overload (not really)

This weekend's travel plans coincided with me finishing my latest book, Agaat. So I picked up the first Hunger Games book for my Kindle app on the iPhone, knowing that I would have at least some free time on the plane, after two of my friends had recommended it to me over our trip to Austin. Very good - and a quick read. Especially when your flight is inexplicably (not really) delayed because your flight crew had not even left the airport they are coming in from, which is even more aggravating when you look up the flight and they weren't supposed to land until your flight took off anyway - how are they supposed to get across the terminal and do all of their checks - who knows? Not Continental. (I did see that we wound with one of the nicest pilots, who saw that we were all waiting on the jetway for our bags - yay tiny planes - and went out to check with the ground crew for us.)

Anyway - between the flight delay and the general coziness of being at the in-laws, I finished the first book Saturday night. Then our flight got delayed leaving, so I read a big chunk of that. Between me reading on the subways on the way to work and in bed this week, I'm almost finished. So good!

Book Update

Tadaa! I officially finished reading Guns, Germs, and Steel. Yay me. This means that I am frantically reading "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest." Good so far... :)

Random thoughts

  • When I said "on the wagon," what I should have said is that I am hobbling along next to the wagon. Which means that I have been to the gym twice in the past two weeks (or twice in the past 10 days, technically).
  • My dog is super-cute tonight. She has this game where she holds her stuffed animal in her mouth and plays soccer with the ball. Tonight she's in the mood to go get it twice, then take it back to her bed, until I get comfortable on the couch again.
  • Did I mention we went to Mr. D's coworkers apartment to watch the Fourth of July fireworks? And that immediately after the fireworks, another guest plugged in his camera and we all had to watch 70 photos of the fireworks show that we just watched?
  • I finally updated my Goodreads shelf, but I don't know why I didn't get a notification that Michelle was waiting to be my bookshelf friend (or whatever they call it). Notes on the books:
  1. I guess I am technically still reading "Too Big to Fail," but it's not exactly a read-before-lights-out-in-bed book, unless you want to immediately fall asleep.
  2. I have been reading "Guns, Germs, and Steel" since we got back from Italy in May. Normally, I don't read this slowly, but it's a dense book. Interesting, but dense.
  3. As soon as I finish #2, I'm going to read the new Stieg Larsson (sp?) book, but if I give up #2 now, I don't know if I'll have the willpower to go back.
  4. I am always reading Ratio (a present from J&R). I lurve it - I have used it to try to get away from recipes without creating disasters, but this would be an excellent choice for anyone trying to learn how to cook, too. Michael Ruhlman (blog here) wrote the book to explain the most basic recipes in cooking, from a chart he found in a professor's office at cooking school (which he wrote about in one of his other books). I use Ratio all the time, but I still feel like I should use it more (I have another post on this in me, but it will need a few days to put together). In the meantime, check out Michael Ruhlman's blog, where he elaborates on some of the ratios in each post (unless he's having fun adventures, like eating his way through cured meat in Italy), and you can always click on the book on the right to find out more about the book.

Annoying Husband

I realized I may gripe a lot on this blog, as another post popped in when I started typing the title for this one (so I'm making a tag for "annoying"). Mr. D is not generally annoying, well, not more than any other husband, but this is getting to me.

Mr. D is NOT a "reader:" he professed to me that he only read one book in high school - he managed to fake his way through the tests. Not that he didn't read in college, or law school - he's really fast, but always claimed that he didn't like to read books for pleasure. I always took it for a short attention span, because he reads magazine articles and blogs like crazy. Though not "silly blogs" like I do - he reads one where people spew about government policy and law firms (yawn). Luckily he does this while I am asleep. Mr. D usually can't fall asleep for at least an hour after we go to bed, so he reads on his laptop after I'm asleep. When he wakes up in the middle of the night, he wakes up his laptop and reads some more until he falls back asleep.

As Mr. D loves new gadgets, I got him an Kindle for Christmas, thinking it might make it easier for him to read, because he could read at night (with the book light) and not lose his page. My plan has backfired.

Whereas I used to be the one in the couple who read, the one who would actually sit and read a book - Mr. D is reading all the time now. Not only when he reads normally, but on the train, on the subway, and on the stationary bike at the gym. He is reading so many more books than I am - I'm reading "In Defense of Food" because he read it first! So annoying - I've created a monster!
